In many operators, acquisition and retention are two separate programs. The affiliate team buys or earns traffic and is judged on registrations and first deposits. The CRM team works the players who are already inside and is judged on activity and lifetime value. They report to different people, use different tools, and often look at different numbers for the same player.
That split is understandable, and it is expensive. The affiliate manager never learns what happened to the players after the first deposit. The CRM manager has no idea which partner a player came from. This article is for the operator, affiliate manager or CRM manager who wants to join the two: how a player travels from an affiliate click to a retained player, what each stage needs, and where TAP and Smartico fit.
What acquisition needs
Acquisition through affiliates is a tracking and trust problem first. Before anything else you need to know, reliably, which partner sent which player, and the partner needs to know you counted them correctly. In practice that means:
- Accurate tracking from click to deposit. Every registration and first deposit attributed to the right affiliate, traffic source and campaign, and reported back to the affiliate.
- Deals that match the traffic. Commission terms the partner understands and that you can afford, per brand and per product.
- Reporting you can act on. Not just a list of clicks. You need to see which sources and partners produce players that deposit, and which do not.
- A partner relationship that does not need constant manual work. Approval, communication, payments and statements handled in one place, so the team spends time on strategy rather than spreadsheets.
This is the ground TheAffiliatePlatform (TAP) covers. Its reporting lets you open a single player in the registration report and see the profile and financial activity behind a row, and its media report groups results by traffic source and affiliate. Its advanced analytics cover acquisition funnels, top-performing partners and long-term player value through deposit cohort analysis.
What retention needs
Retention starts the moment the player registers, not after the first month. A first deposit is the beginning of the relationship, and most of the value sits in what happens next. Retention work needs:
- Behavior data in real time. Deposits, bets and gameplay as they happen, so you can react at the right moment instead of in next week's campaign.
- Segmentation. The ability to treat a new depositor, a regular, a high-value player and a lapsing player differently.
- Channels. Email, pop-ups, push notifications and SMS, with messages that adapt to what the player did.
- Reasons to come back. Missions, levels, leaderboards, points and rewards that give players a goal beyond the next bonus.
- A lifecycle view. Onboarding, engagement, retention and reactivation as stages you plan for, not one blast list.
This is what Smartico does. Its CRM automation covers real-time campaigns and journeys, dynamic segments, churn prediction and A/B testing across email, pop-up, push and SMS. Its gamification covers missions, levels, leaderboards, tournaments, badges, points and a marketplace where points are redeemed. The two are built to work as one platform, so a CRM campaign can trigger a mission or a reward directly.
Where the two meet: the quality of the player
If acquisition and retention are judged separately, acquisition tends to chase volume. Registrations are easy to count, so they become the target. But a registration that never deposits twice is worth very little, and the affiliate who sent it will keep sending more of the same if that is what gets paid and praised.
The place where the two programs meet is the quality of the player. That shows up in three ways.
1. Affiliate-sourced players are players, and the CRM should treat them as such. A player who arrived through an affiliate needs the same welcome flow, the same first-week journey and the same re-engagement as any other player. The difference is that you also know where they came from, and that is useful: it lets you ask whether players from one source behave differently from another after the first deposit. Smartico's onboarding flows are described as turning registrations into first-time deposits, which is exactly the handover point between the two programs.
2. Retention results should flow back to how you judge affiliates. If you only look at registrations and FTDs, you reward the partners who are good at the first step. If you also look at what players do afterwards, you can tune deals, talk to partners about traffic quality and decide who to grow. This is the idea behind measuring the metrics that matter most in affiliate marketing: the number that counts is the one closest to value.
3. Your affiliates are an audience too. Affiliates respond to engagement in the same way players do. A partner who gets a clear onboarding sequence, a mission to reach, a leaderboard to climb and an automatic reward is more likely to stay active. TAP's integrated CRM and gamification for affiliates does this on the affiliate side: automated campaigns, segmentation by performance and activity, and missions, leaderboards and rewards. For the thinking behind it, see our guide to gamification in affiliate programs.
Players who bring players
There is one place where the two programs share a mechanism rather than just a handover. Refer-a-Friend turns players into mini affiliates. Each new player gets a unique referral link generated by TAP. When a friend clicks it and signs up, TAP captures the connection between the referrer and the new player and tracks the activity against your conversion rules. When the referred friend meets your criteria, TAP communicates with Smartico's CRM in real time, events update player profiles and trigger the logic you choose (campaigns, automation rules, missions), and rewards such as cash, free spins or loyalty points are credited automatically. Both the referring player and the friend can receive a reward, and you set the criteria, for example deposits or wagering.
In other words, a retained player becomes a source of acquisition, and acquisition feeds retention again. It is the same loop, run on the player's own network.
How TAP and Smartico fit together
The simplest way to describe the fit is by job:
- Acquire (which partner sent this player, and what did they earn?): TAP, with tracking, deals, reporting and payouts.
- Convert (did the registration become a first deposit?): TAP reports it back to the affiliate, and Smartico's onboarding flows work on the player.
- Engage (what brings the player back this week?): Smartico, with campaigns, missions, levels and leaderboards.
- Retain and reactivate (who is drifting away, and what do we offer?): Smartico, with segments, churn prediction and re-engagement.
- Refer (can this player bring a friend?): Refer-a-Friend, powered by TAP and Smartico together.
- Keep partners active (are our affiliates engaged?): TAP's built-in CRM and gamification for affiliates.
TAP and Smartico come from the same team. TheAffiliatePlatform is part of Mobius Solutions Ltd, the owner of Smartico, and is described as a sister product of Smartico.ai. They are two products with separate jobs: TAP runs your affiliate program, Smartico runs player CRM, gamification and loyalty. The place where the connection is documented on our site is Refer-a-Friend, as described above. For anything beyond that, such as which affiliate data you want available in your CRM and how you want it used, ask for the specifics in a demo rather than assuming.
A practical five-step workflow for an operator
You do not need a big project to start joining the two programs. A workable order:
- Agree on one definition of a good player. Decide, with both teams, what you want from a player in the first 30 days: a first deposit, a second deposit, a number of active days. Write it down. This is your shared target, instead of registrations alone.
- Make sure every player has a source. Check that your tracking attributes each registration and deposit to an affiliate, source and campaign, and that this is visible in your reports.
- Design the first-week journey in your CRM. A welcome flow that moves a registered player toward the first deposit, and a short mission or reward that encourages the second visit. Keep it the same for all sources to begin with.
- Compare partners on what happens after the first deposit. Review sources and affiliates on the behavior you defined in step 1, not only on counts. Use it in your next conversation with each partner and when you adjust deals. Our guide to affiliate fraud prevention is a good companion here, because the same review also exposes traffic that never behaves like real players.
- Engage the partners and add a referral loop. Put your best affiliates on a gamified track with clear goals and rewards, and switch on Refer-a-Friend so that satisfied players can bring others.
Run steps 1 to 4 for a month before you add anything else. Most of the value comes from the two teams looking at the same player.
Questions to ask before you connect the two
Whether you use TAP and Smartico or other tools, these questions show where the gaps are:
- Can the CRM team see which affiliate and source a player came from?
- Can the affiliate team see what players do after the first deposit?
- Are affiliates paid and praised only for registrations, or also for players who stay?
- Does your first-week journey differ by traffic source, and should it?
- Who owns the player after the first deposit: acquisition or retention?
- Are your affiliates themselves receiving any structured communication or goals?
- If a player refers a friend, is that tracked, rewarded and reported automatically?
If several answers are "no" or "I do not know", the two programs are running side by side rather than together.
Next step
An affiliate click is worth what the player does afterwards. If you want to see affiliate tracking, reporting and affiliate-side CRM in TAP, and how it sits next to Smartico's CRM and gamification, book a demo.
