Every iGaming operator that wants affiliate traffic hits the same fork in the road: join an affiliate network, or build and run your own program. From a distance the two look similar. They lead to very different places on cost, control, and who ends up owning your data. Here is how they compare, and how to tell which one your brand actually needs.
First, what an affiliate network actually is
An affiliate network is a middleman. It sits between advertisers (you) and a pool of affiliates, handling the introductions, the tracking, and often the payments. You list your offer, affiliates on the network can pick it up, and the network takes a cut for connecting you. Think of it as a marketplace: you get instant access to affiliates, but you play by the marketplace's rules.
The two paths, side by side
Once you strip away the jargon, you are really choosing between renting reach and building your own.
Path 1: Joining an affiliate network
What you get: a ready-made pool of affiliates, fast. You skip the slow grind of recruiting from scratch, and the network handles tracking and payouts for you.
The trade-off: you give up control and margin. You pay the network's fees on top of affiliate commissions, you compete for attention against every other offer on the network, and the affiliate relationships, along with much of the player data, sit with the network rather than with you. If you ever leave, some of that walks out the door with you.
Path 2: Running your own program
What you get: full control. You choose your affiliates, set your own deals, own every relationship and every row of data, and pay no middleman fee. The program is yours, and it turns into an asset that compounds as it grows.
The trade-off: the work sits with you. You recruit affiliates yourself, and you need software to track, manage, and pay them. That used to mean a heavy technical build, which is why plenty of operators defaulted to networks. It does not anymore.
So which one fits your brand?
A rough guide:
- Lean toward a network if you are brand new, have no affiliates yet, and want traffic tomorrow with minimal setup, and you are happy to trade margin and control for speed.
- Run your own program if you want to own your affiliate relationships and player data, keep your margins, and build a channel that is genuinely yours. For most established iGaming operators, this is where the long-term value sits.
There is no rule that says you have to pick once and never change. Many brands start on a network to get moving, then bring the program in-house once they know affiliates work for them.
Where TheAffiliatePlatform comes in

Running your own program only makes sense if the software makes it easy, and that is the job TheAffiliatePlatform does. It hands you the tooling a network would: recruiting and onboarding affiliates, flexible CPA, revenue-share, and hybrid deals, accurate server-to-server tracking, and automated payouts, while keeping every affiliate relationship and every player under your own roof.
In other words, you get the reach and structure of a network without handing over control or a slice of your revenue. If that is the direction you want to go, get in touch and we will show you how it works.
